Oakvillegreen is a non-partisan environmental charity that has been helping protect and restore nature through community education and local action since 2000. Your purchase enables local action, education and advocacy to create a GREENER Oakville. Since 2015, this sale has added thousands of native trees, shrubs and plants to Oakville gardens. This sale annually contributes roughly 3,000 sq ft of pollinator-friendly habitat throughout Halton region.
Trees and shrubs will be planted in a 1-2-gallon container at the time of pickup, with an average height of 3-5 ft. Trees and shrubs will comfortably fit on the floor of the backseat of a car.
Native plants and trees are hardy and will thrive in the Southern Ontario climate. Typically, plants can be planted immediately but will withstand staying out of the ground if needed. Store outdoors in a shady location, away from direct sunlight. If there is a frost warning, keep perennial plants protected indoors. We recommend light watering or moistening the soil as necessary.
Here is a guide with the species name, photo at pickup, and photo are maturity. Keep it handy for future years for help identifying plants in case you forget which plants were planted where.
We recommend compost or fine mulch on the surface around the perennial, tree, or shrub after planting, to help plants get a good start by preventing drying and keeping out unwanted plants (weeds). We also suggest labelling plants in your garden to avoid accidental uprooting later on.
Here is a helpful video on best practices for planting a new tree or shrub. As specified in the video, mulching is advised to keep roots moist, cool in the summer, and insulated in winter. You should plan to mulch each spring and fall. Place mulch in a donut shape around the tree, ensuring mulch is kept away from the base of the tree or shrub to prevent rotting. Beware of weedtrimmers, as they can damage trees and shrubs. Instead, remove grass and weeds by hand to avoid damage.
In future years, your native perennials will not need additional watering as they are adapted to the normal weather conditions of the area. However, this growing season, you should water your new native perennials to ensure proper root establishment.
