We are very excited to announce that at the council meeting on December 18th, town council approved the 2018 budget, which included $40,000 of funding to help us continue our backyard tree planting program into Fall 2018!
This funding will not only help us plant more trees in Oakville backyards next fall (in addition to the 40 that will be planted by the summer), but will also allow us to further educate homeowners on tree planting and care by hosting Tree Tenders Volunteer Training, Oakville Tree Tours, and other workshops and community events.
The 2016 Growing Livability report on Oakville’s urban forest identified residential property as having the most potential planting area of any land use class. The Backyard Tree Planting program encourages planting on private property to tap into that potential. This is necessary if we want to achieve the town’s goal of 40% canopy cover by 2057. We are looking forward to working with the town to reach that goal, and their support for this private property planting initiative is an important first step.
