Oakvillegreen is a non-profit, non-partisan environmental organization, founded in 2000, working to ensure our community becomes healthy and sustainable. Oakvillegreen is the community’s strongest voice for responsible planning that values, protects and enhances our natural heritage. To accomplish our mission we advocate for sounder local, provincial and federal laws and we create and encourage initiatives that move us towards sustainability. To further our objectives, we cooperate with other organizations who are working to safeguard and improve our environment for future generations.
Our goals are:
- To ensure human health and the health of our environment is protected.
- To have all levels of government adopt sustainability as their guiding principle.
- To ensure that the biodiversity of our native plants and animals is protected and enhanced.
- To ensure that development is ecologically responsible.
- To raise public awareness about local environmental issues and to foster citizen participation.
What We Do
Activism: Oakvillegreen was founded as an activist group that drew attention to the Town's plans to develop 7,600 acres of lands North of Dundas. That activism on current issues continues as we address energy generating plants and plans to build incinerators.
Advocacy: Much of Oakvillegreen's work is focused on advocacy for such issues as OMB reform, change to Provincial Planning Policy and the Greenbelt legislation. Advocacy for needed local bylaws such as a Clear-Cutting Bylaw and a ban on the Cosmetic Use of Pesticides is also a major portion of our work.
Initiatives: Oakvillegreen doesn't just suggest changes, we roll up our sleeves and make things happen. Our affliated groups such as Ground Breakers Oakville and Gardens Off Drugs plant native trees, hold public seminars on organic gardening and invite speakers to community forums. Soon Oakvillegreen will introduce a number of new committees that will introduce several new community initatives around tree planting, food security and energy.
Consultation: Oakvillegreen participates on various Town committees and stakeholder advisory committees. We also provide advise and support to residents' association and green groups.
Education & Events: Oakvillegreen will hold a minimum of four public meetings a year, each time with a special guest speaker. As well, we sponsor film screenings and facilitated discussions. Please check our calendar events to see what's upcoming. Even better, join Oakvillegreen and receive regular updates about community events plus our newsletter.
